Bio

Mark Ison practice spans both the healthcare and general corporate areas. As a member of the Firm’s healthcare group, Mr. Ison advises physicians and physician groups, physical therapists, chiropractors, nurse practitioners and physician assistants, as well as physician joint ventures, laboratories, pharmacies, independent diagnostic testing facilities (IDTFs) and ambulatory surgery centers, on regulatory issues (including compliance with the federal Stark Law, Anti-Kickback Statute, False Claims Act, Civil Monetary Penalties Law, HIPAA and analogous state laws governing self-referral, fee-splitting, kickbacks, the corporate practice of medicine and privacy), Medicare reimbursement and reassignment, certificates of need, facility and professional licensing, professional entity formation and qualification, prompt payment and various other matters. He also has significant experience working with healthcare providers on a broad range of operational and transactional issues, such as employment and recruitment agreements, management agreements, professional services agreements, the formation, operation, dissolution, purchase and sale of practices and joint ventures (including complex private equity-backed transactions and physician-hospital integration transactions), payor disputes, and covenants not-to-compete. As a member of the Firm’s corporate law group, Mr. Ison represents businesses and individuals in a number of industries in connection with mergers and acquisitions, venture capital and private equity financing, securities matters, business formation and dissolution and day-to-day operational issues, including purchase, sale, leasing and licensing transactions and employment matters. Mr. Ison graduated from Vanderbilt University Law School in 2004, where he was a Dean’s Scholar, served as Notes Development Editor for the Vanderbilt Law Review and was elected Order of the Coif. He is an Adjunct Instructor in health law at the Belmont College of Law and is a frequent speaker on health law topics, notably with respect to fraud and abuse and health care mergers and acquisitions.
